Background Info:

Bob and Beth both grew up in California. We first moved to Japan in 1968 to minister to Japanese university students. In 1981 we began working with Asian Access: Bob coordinated the curriculum for Japanese pastors through the Japan Church Growth Institute; Beth taught music at the Christian Academy in Japan (CAJ) and trained Japanese musicians at Tokyo Biblical Seminary. Our two children attended CAJ through high school. David now is an electrical engineer living in Seattle; Sheri is director of academic advising at Biola University.

Ministry Assignment:

  • Retired and living in Seattle now (2004-present)
  • Senior Advisors in U.S. Office (1995-2004)
    • Since 1995 we worked in the U.S. home office, focusing on staff training and development, Church Multiplication Teams new staff preparation and reentry of missionaries for home assignment.
  • Career missionaries in Japan (1981-'95)

Words of wisdom...

Connect with missionaries, correspond with them, interview them personally, pray with them about your vision. Seek an initial short-term service opportunity.

When you're in Japan, be sure to...

Learn a little Japanese before you go, and be sure to enjoy cherry blossom viewing if you are there in the spring time.

In Japan, we enjoy...

Collaborating with Japanese on a ministry project, e.g., planning/rehearsing music for an evangelistic event. Working with Japanese colleagues when in Japan to strengthen and encourage them in their lives and ministry.

Wonderful ministry memories...

Raising children in a multi-cultural setting, seeing them enjoy a different culture and mature to adulthood with a world perspective. Fun memory: as a family, riding our bikes outside of Tokyo to go skiing on an artificial slope.

What we've learned here...

Growing as a listener, with patience; being a perpetual learner; accepting the need to develop a network of relationships from which ministry decisions emerge.

How is God blessing your life and ministry?

Lifelong friendships -- watching former students grow in their Christian faith, maturing in leading their own families to serve Christ. Reconnecting with Japanese friends as they come to the U.S. to visit. Since we are now in the U.S., we have satisfaction in being able to provide helpful resources for missionary colleagues in Japan.
