Handley JoeSilk Oct2015 500pxThis has been an extraordinary year in the life of the Church of Asia. Every day, we hear of political tensions, natural disasters and religious intolerance. But in the midst of disturbing news, the church of Jesus Christ is on the move. And you can help to move the spiritual needle in Japan! My predecessor Doug Birdsall recently reminded me of how the 2020 Vision for Japan came to be. Back in 1986, Doug was sensing the Lord might be...

Asian believers cast vision for massive outreach

Written by Mission Network News

(Photo courtesy of Asian Access)Asia (MNN) -- Terrorists are striking fear around the world, but they're not stopping dedicated believers. By the year 2030, Christians in an Asian country hope to have sent out 20,000 indigenous missionaries. Joe Handley with Asian Access, a ministry dedicated to raising up Christian leaders, says: "There is a sense, at least for many parts of Asia that the Gospel has been brought to them, and they owe a debt to God for bringing this hope to...

joe headshot Oct2015I just want to say thank you for your support to us at Asian Access. We are deeply grateful for your partnership, your prayers and your financial support. It's amazing to see what God is doing through the lives of leaders all over Asia. This summer, in particular, your work with helping us with the people of Nepal after the earthquake was deeply moving. So I just want to say thank you this Thanksgiving season...

ICETE consultation 2015It was an honor being invited to participate at the International Council for Evangelical Theological Education Conference this year. A group of their leaders and a few others suggested we open a deeper dialog between those of us doing non-formal theological education and those doing more formal theological education. As you can tell from our group photo from Antalya, Turkey, it was a tremendous week together. Of course, I ...

Handley JoeSilk Oct2015 500pxSilk and I took our son John to Asia on a recent trip to several countries where Asian Access operates. We were touched deeply how each Asian Access leader took their valuable time to talk to our son John and personally invest in him. They spoke into his life and left a lasting impression on him. So much so, that afterward, John reflected to his mother: "Mom, it's amazing. How...

A Lesson on Reconciliation: A Case Study from JapanThis has been a turbulent year in Asia. China has pushed forward with territorial claims to islands all over the Eastern Pacific. In Japan, Prime Minister Abe offered what many saw as a partial apology for Japan’s role prior to and during WWII. In the midst of the turmoil, it’s inspiring to see how Chinese and Japanese pastors have responded. Walking the walk of...

ND gathering 2015 web 500At Asian Access, we have been affirmed for our ability to identify leaders who are right for our program. We’ve had numerous requests to share what we believe we have learned. So with humility, let me offer a few thoughts on our approach. The Asian Access approach is rooted in a core value: a commitment to developing a deep love relationship with...

Blockade of supplies into Nepal continues

Written by Mission Network News

(Photo courtesy Asian Access)Nepal (MNN) -- It doesn’t look like there’s a solution to the disagreement between Nepal and India anywhere in sight. Noel Becchetti of Asian Access says India is still angry about Nepal’s new constitution and keeps blocking supplies. “As India is exercising their political will, they have the power unfortunately to basically starve these guys out,...

all in 500x221Asian Access recently reviewed our values as a mission. What a fascinating journey and valuable learning experience it was! We spent hours in dialog throughout the movement at every level: volunteers, staff, alumni, faculty, board and reference council. It was nothing short of amazing to see things come together. As we honed the various nuances and prioritized down to three core characteristics, we came up with three core values. The first is...

paul making tentTentmaking Ministry. Bi-Vocational Pastors. We’ve all heard these terms, and they sound so good. In countries where it is rare to find churches that can afford to support a full-time pastor, what is the answer? Why, self-supporting pastors, of course. Leaders earn their income through a job, farming, or other means, then invest in their ministries in their spare time. It sounds so sensible and neat. But the often-grim reality is that surviving as a tentmaker is difficult. In addition, their ministries can suffer due to the time and energy they must devote to generating income.

asia greeneryAt the latest leader development session in one of the restricted-access countries where A2 is at work, one thing is clear: Pastors here persevere in the ministry despite persistent persecution. Let two of our leaders share their testimonies with you in their own words: “In [location deleted], I was able to start three churches. Soldiers or local authorities would stop me from my rounds to these three churches, but we learned to post watchmen so that if police were on their way to our meeting locations I could temporarily slip away until the danger of in...

The church in Japan serves Nepal after earthquakes

Written by Mission Network Newse

Church in Japan ‘gives back’ in NepalNepal (MNN) -- Japanese Christians know firsthand the value of receiving help in times of disaster. That's why a team of individuals impacted by the 2011 tsunami spent their holiday in Nepal helping their neighbors. The team spent four days cleaning up a children’s home and helping a village rebuild. Despite everything the Japanese team has given,...

    Adair Update Nov 5, 2015 | 10:50 am

I think I use the term “friend” quite loosely…I fear possibly more in line with the Facebook generation’s definition of friendship than how I would prefer to define it. In our last newsletter, I just noticed that we used the[…]

The De La Courier Oct 31, 2015 | 22:12 pm

    Adair Update Jul 27, 2015 | 23:21 pm

I started this when Mom was still here, which was more than a year ago. Wowzas. But re-reading my jotted notes made me chuckle. Japanese is vague. There’s so much reading between the lines that sometimes I second-guess my second-guessing (“sometimes”[…]
